Sona Sharma is determined to help save the planet.  After learning about the climate crisis at school, Sona becomes worried that people aren’t doing enough to protect the Earth. She decides that if the grown-ups won’t act quickly, she will! But trying to change the world is not always as easy as it sounds.

Sona begins making changes at home - sometimes a little too enthusiastically. Appa is not impressed when she throws away her baby sister’s nappies, and Thatha certainly doesn’t appreciate being told to get rid of his neatly organised plastic files. Even with the best intentions, Sona soon realises that helping the planet requires patience, teamwork and understanding.

When she discovers that many of the kolams - the beautiful traditional designs drawn outside homes during festival season - are made with non-organic materials, Sona comes up with a creative plan to make them more environmentally friendly. By bringing her family and community together, she hopes to show that small changes can make a big difference.

Why you should treat-your-shelf:

  • Introduces environmental awareness in a child-friendly way
  • Encourages children to take positive action for the planet
  • Celebrates culture, family and community traditions
  • Funny, thoughtful and relatable for young readers
